The whiteboard is where OSTs go to die
Every product team that discovers the Opportunity Solution Tree framework has the same experience: the first workshop is electric. You map outcomes, opportunities, and solutions in a clear visual hierarchy. Everyone leaves aligned.
Then two sprints pass. The whiteboard photo is buried in Slack. The tree is outdated. Nobody updates it because the cost of redrawing is too high.
What a living OST needs
A living Opportunity Solution Tree needs three things that whiteboards can't provide:
1. Easy restructuring
Discovery is messy. Opportunities get reframed, merged, or split. Solutions move between opportunities. A living tree needs drag-and-drop restructuring that doesn't require redrawing the entire diagram.
2. Connected assumptions and experiments
Each solution should carry its assumptions and the experiments designed to test them. When you update an experiment result, the tree should reflect what you've learned — making validated solutions visually distinct from untested hunches.
3. A bridge to delivery
The gap between "validated solution" and "user story in the backlog" is where discovery value gets lost. A living tree should let you push validated solutions directly into your delivery workflow — as user stories in a story map, or work items in your backlog.
How Product Planner handles this
Product Planner's OST view was designed around these three principles. Trees are fully interactive — drag nodes, restructure hierarchies, and track assumption tests inline. When a solution is validated, you can push it directly into a User Story Map in the same workspace.
The AI assistant helps you explore opportunities you might miss and suggests assumption tests based on your solution hypotheses.
Try it with your current discovery work
Take your most recent discovery cycle and rebuild the OST in Product Planner. You'll immediately see opportunities and gaps that were invisible on the whiteboard.
